Bordeaux to San Sebastian!

Filled with delicious restaurants, gorgeous cycling and 3 world-renowned wine regions, this is our Bordeaux to San Sebastian tour. 2000 years of winemaking tradition are just a bike ride away. We begin the journey an ancient stone’s throw away from Saint Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a perfect launching point for our daily rides through the rolling hills of wine-grapes. Our luxury B&B offers a visit to their state of the art winery and a perfect opportunity to see some of the 125 miles of weaving underground caverns. The village itself is a wine & history lover’s paradise, the shopping plentiful and the architecture extremely well preserved. Asides from the wine and food, we’ll make sure to explore the famous XI century Monolithic Church and other historic monuments.

Next we’ll make our way to the French Basque country. For centuries have the ruling families of Europe been coming to this region to relax and enjoy its “lost in time” feel. The foothills of the Pyrenees are a land of traditional cuisine, coastal vistas and incredible riding. Here is a true contrast between the rural quietness and the cultured luxury of the better-known Biarritz. Our “country-chic” auberge is set in the lush green inland, surrounded by a park of oak and walnut trees. The Ostape is a perfect place to unwind before setting off for our next leg of the tour.

Time to cross the border and on to San Sebastian, touted as being one of the best food cities in the world and having more Michelin stars per capita than any other city, even Paris. The food is truly legendary, as chefs and foodies alike make pilgrimages to taste the delicacies created here. Try one of the famous pintxos (tapas from the Basque Country) between days filled with easy pedaling through the vines and seascapes. For our last evening we’ll dine in a Michelin starred restaurant, enjoying the camaraderie shared over the course of this sumptuous week.

Hotels

Relais Franc Mayne

A luxury B&B set in the vineyards of the Saint Emilion appellation, the Relais Franc Mayne is just next to the low-lying walls of the village. Uniquely designed, each room has been decorated in it’s own vibrant theme. A wine domain in itself, we’ll taste its delicious wine after a tour of the underground limestone chambers. Be sure to find some time to take in the sunset over the vinyards from the naturally filtered and heated stone swimming pool.

.

L'Auberge Basque

A seamless blend of Basque tradition and modern comfort, l’Auberge Basque is an oasis in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. Just inland of the famed beach town of St. Jean de Luz, the location is more than ideal to be able to enjoy both the seaside villages and mountain fare. There is a theme of rustic-chic and peace that has become greatly sought after yet rarely perfected like at l’Auberge Basque. The young chef-owner, a disciple of many 3 star restaurants, has recently been awarded his first Michelin star for his delectable cuisine.

Saiaz Gataria Hotel

Originally a Gothic tower built in 1450; the Saiaz Getaria is centered in the historic fishing village of Getaria. Overlooking the Bay of Biscay and backed by the Txakoli vineyards, the renovations have been lovingly overseen by the owners. Understated luxury is the name of the game here and being only 20 K’s from San Sebastian, this is a wonderful location to discover the city while retreating to the calm of a quaint coastal village.
